Operation Buterbrod
Episode 8 - Peasant
The computer lab had been busy just before, but on this early morning, the two Soviets that had
been up all night working diligently in preparation for an immediate
deployment to Spain, had become the sole occupants. Both Muzhik and
Yezhov ate a simple buterbrod meal at their desks, which were
perpendicular to one another. The two still lost deeply in work, when
of all people, it was Yezhov who started a mindless conversation as
morning broke. The warmth light snuck through the partially closed
blinds of the nearest window.
“Karabanov…”
“Yes, Comrade Yezhov?”
“Why the name Muzhik? Is
there something pleasant about being named a peasant, that I do not
know about? It must be a joke, yeah?” The question was punctuated
with a loud crunch into his stale bread.
“Ha…” Muzhik chuckled. “I guess I am just satisfied with simple things.”
“Such as?”
“Bed, bread and a bride.”
“And you only have two of those now.”
“For now, for now… but if I am lucky, I will have all three sometime soon.”
